Several members of the Cultural Burning and On-The-Ground Adaptation Roundtables joined forces to organize a session focused on Fire and Climate Adaptation at the 2024 Southwest Adaptation Forum (SWAF 2024).
The 2024 Southwest Adaptation Forum (SWAF) was held in Tucson, Arizona from February 27 - 29, 2024. The SWAF brings together practitioners, professionals, researchers, and community members working in diverse ways to address the effects of climate change. Attended by over 168 participants and co-developed by a broad planning committee, the 2024 SWAF sought to:
Strengthen the network of peers working across all sectors of adaptation practice across the Southwest,
Improve awareness of, and access to, tools and resources to support adaptation efforts, and
Leverage and uplift existing and new climate adaptation relevant efforts to increase the broader solution space
Participants explored a variety of themes including: agriculture and working landscapes, urban adaptation, water solutions, drought and flood resilience, food sovereignty, and fire.
Members of the Cultural Burning and On-the-ground Adaptation roundtables co-organized an interactive session on fire during the second day of the conference.
This session featured presentations and break-out discussions about: Proactive Watershed management (Molly McCormick), Fuels Management (Melvin Hunter Jr.), and Cultural Burning (Anissa McKenna & Cynthia Naha).
